Nine Arches Bridge to be named a world heritage

The Central Cultural Fund (CCF) has made plans to designate the Demodara Nine-arch Railway Bridge and the landscape of the surrounding tea plantation as a World Heritage Site through UNESCO.

According to this plan, the entire region including the nine-arch bridge and Demodara Railway Station has been designated as a cultural landscape, CCF Director General Prof. Gamini Ranasinghe said.

He said that the section from the Idalgashinna Railway Station to the Demodara Railway Station would be developed as one zone where lavatory facilities would also be installed for the tourists.

The Director General said that the CCF is carrying out its conservation work and that a request will be made to UNESCO soon to name this entire landscape as a cultural landscape.

Narcotics stock to be destroyed in Palaviya today

A stock of 494 kg and 48 g of heroin is to be destroyed at 10.00 am today (April 28).

Legal proceedings of these drugs have been concluded after being seized during narcotics raids.

Police Media Spokesman, SSP Buddika Manatunga, stated that the drugs are scheduled to be destroyed in an incinerator belonging to INSEE Cement located in the Palaviya area, Puttalam.

Accordingly, police stated that at 7.00 a.m. today, the drug stockpile will be taken into custody by the SL Police from the High Court and taken to the Palaviya area in Puttalam under high security.

Part of the drug haul – 250 kg and 996 g of heroin was seized from 06 foreign nationals during a joint Sri Lanka Navy and Police Narcotics Bureau raid on 15.12.2021. The other portion – 243 kg and 052 g of heroin was seized from 07 foreign nationals in a similar raid on 19.04.2022.

Ex-President Ranil to appear before CIABOC today

Former President Ranil Wickremesinghe is scheduled to appear before the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC) today (April 28) at 9.30 a.m.

He has been summoned to record a statement over the statement he had made on MP Chamara Sampath Dassanayake.

Former President Wickremesinghe, who was initially summoned to the CIABOC on April 17 but requested a postponement. He had requested a date after April 27th to appear before CIABOC, citing that his lawyer Ronald Perera is currently abroad.

Rainfall over 100 mm in several areas

The Meteorology Department states that the showers or thundershowers will occur at most places of the island during the afternoon or night today (April 28).

The Intertropical Convergence Zone (where winds from the Northern Hemisphere and Southern Hemisphere converge) affects the island’s weather, according to the dep.

Several spells of showers may occur in North-western and Western provinces and in Mannar, Galle and Matara districts in the morning.

Heavy falls of about 100 mm are likely at some places in Central, Sabaragamuwa, Uva, Eastern and North-central provinces and in Vavuniya, Mullaittivu and Kurunegala districts.

The general public is kindly requested to take adequate precautions to minimize damages caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.

Misty conditions can be expected at some places in Central and Uva provinces during the morning.
