Ninth President to be elected today

The Presidential Election 2024 is held today (21) from 7 am to 4 pm with a total number of 171.4 Mn Sri Lankan citizens getting the opportunity to cast their votes to elect the Ninth Executive President of Sri Lanka.

Election Commission Chairman R. M. A. L. Rathnayake said all necessary arrangements have been made to hold a peaceful free and fair election without any hindrances, interference, obstacles, violence and rigging with the assistance from the relevant authorities including the Police.

Security measures include the deployment of 63,000 police officers and 10,000 civil defense personnel, with additional support from the Special Task Force (STF) and the Tri-Forces. Polling is taking place across 13,421 centers, with over 150,000 government officials overseeing operations.

The Election Commission has banned public gatherings, outdoor screenings, and celebrations after the vote, and strict enforcement will be in place to maintain order. 

Any disruptions at polling stations could result in a re-polling process.

International election observers, including representatives from the EU, Commonwealth, and Asian Election Observation Network, are monitoring the proceedings. Special transport services have been arranged to facilitate voter turnout.
