No change in bus & trishaw fares despite fuel price drop

Despite tonight’s (17) fuel reduction, bus and trishaw fares would remain unchanged, reports say.

Dr. Thilan Miranda of the National Transport Commission has said that the diesel prices should drop by 4% or more for bus fares to be reduced and today’s price drop is much lower than that.

Also, All Island Three Wheeler Owners’ Association (AITWOA) – Sudil Jayaruk has said that they too, are unable to reduce fares. He adds that in order to do so, they would require the current weekly quota of 5 litres per day.

Noting that they are forced to seek out fuel supplies for black market prices, he says that this fuel price drop will not be profitable for them.

However, if the quota is increased, we will definitely take measures to slash the fares, he has added.
