Due to the shortage of materials used for printing National Identity Cards (NIC), the issuance of NICs for children born after 2005 has been suspended until August.

Department of Registration of Persons’ Commissioner General Pradeep Saputhanthri said that arrangements have been made to issue a certified document instead of the NIC to these children to appear for the O/L Examination.

The Commissioner General said the document issued will be valid until October.

Accordingly, he said the issuance of NICs has to be suspended until the current shortage of smart cards is alleviated.
