Most of the sauces labelled ‘tomato’ and sold in the market do not contain tomatoes at all, it has been found out during the raids conducted by the Public Health Inspectors (PHI).
The PHIs said that the raids revealed that some had even added colorants to turmeric powder and chilli powder.
Meanwhile, Public Health Inspectors Union Treasurer W.D. Roshan Kumara said that about 30 traders were sued for selling altered food items such as chilli powder, flour, tomato sauce and white sugar.
These vendors and manufacturers were identified in the raids conducted throughout the country based on the complaints received by the PHIs.
The Union further said that raids are being conducted to find traders who sell unfit food items.
