National People’s Power (NPP) Executive Member Samanmalee Gunasinghe yesterday said that prostitution will be legalised under a Government of the National People’s Power (Jathika Jana Balawegaya).

Joining a discussion with an internet channel, she pointed out that prostitutes are being created within the current system. She also mentioned that a system of rules should be established for prostitution.

Stating that this is something that exists in the culture whether one likes it or not, Samanmalee Gunasinghe also mentioned that if there is a legal framework, she will have protection.

“Currently, women undergo a lot of economic pressure in the family. Due to these economic problems, the woman has become insecure. The woman has to go out and go to the spa. The spa is good. However, our spa hosts a different task. Prostitution needs some legal system. But we are not promoting this. If we give her another profession, if she can be given a job where she can work with dignity, if we can give her a job that does not exploit her labour inhumanely, we can eliminate the profession of sex worker. The National People’s Power has a programme for that. We will accept legalising prostitution,”she said.

Pointing out that women and children have become seriously insecure in the society, Samanmalee Gunasinghe also stated that the Jathika Jana Balavegaya has a programme to dedicate itself to their safety.
