A bus carrying employees of the Uma Oya Project Office went down a precipice on the Ella – Wellawaya Road this morning (18) near the project office at Karandagolla.

The bus driver was killed while six injured passengers were admitted to the Wellawaya Hospital.

A passenger who was travelling in the bus told the media that the bus started its journey at around 7.15 this morning and the accident occurred due to a brake failure of the speeding bus.

“I was also on the bus. When the driver uncle turned the bus, the brakes didn’t work. He tried his best to save us. We all screamed at him to change the gear but he couldn’t do it at the speed he was driving. When the uncle tried to take another turn, the bus went down. There were about 10 people on the bus. Only two of us were conscious. The others were taken to the hospital in another vehicle. Later on we found out that the uncle has passed away,” he said.
