Only personalised stamps issued featuring Harini, Vijitha – Postal Dept.

While clarifying reports circulating about postal stamps featuring Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya and Minister Vijitha Herath in celebration of the 150th World Postal Day, the Postal Department said that only personalised stamps have been issued with their images.

The department said two personalised souvenirs, including stamps with the images of Harini Amarasuriya and Vijitha Herath, were presented to them as chief guests of the event.

These personalised stamps fall under the commemorative stamp category and are intended solely as souvenirs.

The Department said these stamps are not official postage stamps and will not be used for mailing purposes.

As a part of tradition, the department provides such personalised stamps as keepsakes on special occasions.

The department also highlighted that personalised stamps can be created by anyone using their choice of images, but they are not part of the official postal services.

They said to mark the 150th Postal Day, two official stamps were issued for World Postal Day 2024, based on designs from the Universal Postal Union and these stamps will be used by all member countries.

CEAT assures job security following Michelin Lanka acquisition

CEAT OHT Lanka (Pvt) Limited, a wholly owned subsidiary of CEAT Limited, India, has reassured employees that their jobs are secure following the acquisition of the CAMSO brand’s off-highway construction equipment bias tyre and tracks business from Michelin Lanka (Pvt) Ltd.

The holding company, CEAT Ltd. of Mumbai, India, announced in December 2024 that a definitive agreement had been signed for the acquisition. This includes the Midigama plant. the Casting Product Division in Kotugoda and some parts of other divisions providing central services.

To formalize the transition, a tripartite Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed on May 22, 2025, between CEAT OHT Lanka, Michelin Lanka, and the Inter Company Employees Union.

The agreement guarantees 100% job security, preservation of past service, seniority, remuneration, and employee benefits.

However, employees of Michelin Lanka in Midigama, Matara, recently protested claiming that their jobs were at risk due to the sale.

CEAT, operating in over 120 countries, emphasized its commitment to employee welfare and workplace satisfaction, affirming it will honor all obligations under the agreement and actively invest in business growth.

CEAT, listed on the Mumbai Stock Exchange and part of the RPG Group, is a leading manufacturer of tyres for cars, buses, trucks, motorcycles, scooters, and off-highway vehicles.

CEAT had previously acquired Kelani Tyres, a fully state-owned enterprise in 1993, which was considered as a controversial deal facilitated by Ranil Wickremesinghe.

Riza Sarook to be mayoral candidate for CMC?

Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) MP Mujibur Rahman has announced that Riza Sarook will be fielded as the mayoral candidate for the Colombo Municipal Council (CMC).

He also confirmed that the approval of all opposition parties has been obtained for this decision.

A special meeting of representatives from the SJB, UNP, SLFP, and SLPP parties was held last week at a prominent hotel in Kollupitiya, Colombo, to discuss and reach a common understanding on the establishment of power in Local Government bodies where the majority power has not been established yet.

As a result, an agreement was reached to appoint the SJB to the position of Mayor of Colombo, with the UNP taking the post of Deputy Mayor.

Meanwhile, the National People’s Power (NPP) has nominated Vraie Cally Balthazar as its mayoral candidate.

Australian Deputy PM Marles arrives in SL

Australian Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister Richard Marles arrived in Sri Lanka last night (June 02) on an official visit.

He was accompanied by a 15-member delegation on a special aircraft from the Australian Ministry of Defence.

He was welcomed at the Bandaranaike International Airport in Katunayake by officials including Deputy Minister of Public Security and Parliamentary Affairs – Sunil Watagala.

This visit aims to strengthen bilateral relations and enhance defence cooperation between the two countries.

Richard Marles is scheduled to depart for India tonight after concluding his visit.
