He emphasized that modern technology will be used to the maximum extent in the implementation of this project. He also said that the Aruwakkalu Garbage Project will not affect the life of the public or the environment. The “Colombo Metropolitan Solid Waste Management Plan” under the Urban Development and Housing Ministry commenced in 2017.

This garbage project is being implemented with the aim of solving the problem of disposal of urban solid waste which is increasing day by day.

Accordingly, under this scheme, about 1200 metric tonnes of garbage collected daily in Colombo will be transported by train from Kelaniya to Puttalam, Aruvakkalu garbage yard located 170 km’s away.

The garbage will be dumped at the Aruwakkalu garbage site and then disposed off at the nearby sanitary landfill.
