Over 1,500 specialists and doctors have left the country for overseas opportunities in the past year,  spokesperson for the Government Medical Officers’ Association – Dr. Chamil Wijesinghe has said.

He warns that an additional 5,000 qualified doctors are poised to follow suit, potentially exacerbating the shortage.

This trend, driven by economic hardship and other factors, has resulted in the closure of at least 40 hospitals and threatens further strain on remaining medical facilities.
