The Cabinet has approved to remove the Social Security Contribution Levy imposed on the production of paddy.

Minister of Agriculture Mahinda Amaraweera said the decision was taken with the aim of increasing the sale of agricultural crops. “I believe that the farmers will be able to enjoy the benefit of the tax removal,” he said.

With the removal of the levy, the minister said the mill owners will be able to purchase paddy at a higher price.

Paddy mill owners were charged 2.5% of the income earned from the production of paddy as the Social Security Contribution Levy.
