Padukka shooting : SLAF to conduct separate probe

The Sri Lanka Air Force (SLAF) has launched an inquiry into the incident that took place in Padukka today (08) morning involving the death of a SLAF corporal in Padukka.

It was reported that the individual was killed in an exchange of fire with police and Special Task Force (STF) personnel at Angamuwa in Padukka. According to reports, the corporal, who had been off duty at that time, had succumbed to his injuries once hospitalized.

Police Spokesperson DIG & Attorney-at-Law Nihal Thalduwa had said that it is believed the deceased was the shooter involved in the double murder in Moragahahena yesterday (07) afternoon.

He added that the police and the police STF had set up a checkpoint in Padukka and attempted to inspect a motorcyclist, he had attempted to open fire at the police. Police had retaliated, resulting in the individual’s death.

Meanwhile, the Sri Lanka Air Force (SLAF) is conducting a separate inquiry into the incident, according to the SLAF Spokesman – Group Captain Dushan Wijesinghe.
He said that the Sri Lanka Air Force takes any involvement of its personnel in criminal activity seriously and will work closely with law enforcement agencies to investigate the incident.

Committee probing Deshabandu to convene daily from today

The high-level Committee of Inquiry investigating allegations of gross abuse of power by suspended Inspector General of Police (IGP) Deshabandu Tennakoon will commence daily hearings starting today (June 16) until the conclusion of the inquiry.

Accordingly, IGP Tennakoon appeared before the committee at 9.30 a.m. today continuing a process that began with his initial appearance in May.

The committee, chaired by Supreme Court Justice P. P. Surasena, includes Justice W.M.N.P. Iddawela and National Police Commission Chairman E.W.M. Lalith Ekanayake.

The committee has previously convened on several occasions and recorded statements from IGP Tennakoon and several others.

On June 11, the committee of inquiry with the participation of Additional Solicitor General (President’s Counsel) Dileepa Peiris and Deputy Solicitor General Rajitha Perera, representing the Attorney General’s Department, and R.S. Weerawickrama Attorney-at-Law, appearing on behalf of the Inspector General of Police, cross-examined the witnesses.

Landslide warnings issued for 07 districts

The National Building Research Organisation (NBRO) has issued landslide warnings for seven districts due to ongoing adverse weather conditions.

A Level-2 warning has been issued for the Ayagama and Ratnapura areas in the Ratnapura District.

Level-1 warnings have been issued for the following Divisional Secretariat Divisions:

  • Colombo District: Padukka
  • Galle District: Elpitiya
  • Kalutara District: Walallawita, Agalawatte, Palindanuwara, Bulathsinhala, and Mathugama
  • Kandy District: Ganga Ihala Korale
  • Kegalle District: Yatiyanthota, Deraniyagala, Dehiowita
  • Nuwara Eliya District: Ambagamuwa
  • Ratnapura District: Pelmadulla, Eheliyagoda, Nivitigala, Kuruwita, Elapatha, and Kalawana

Showers expected in parts of the island today

Showers have been predicted at times in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central, Southern and North-western provinces today (June 16), according to the Department of Meteorology.

Fairly heavy rains above 50 mm are likely at some places in the Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces and in the Nuwara-Eliya, Kandy, Galle and Matara districts.

A few showers may occur in the Northern province and in the Anuradhapura district as well.

Strong winds of about 40-50kmph can be expected at times over the Western slopes of the central hills and in the Northern, North-central, Western, Sabaragamuwa, Southern and Northwestern provinces and in the Trincomalee district.

The general public has also been requested to take adequate precautions to minimize damages caused by temporary localized strong winds.
