The Public Health Inspectors’ Union (PHIU) have decided to launch a two-day strike from today (30 Oct.), putting forward several demands.

According to Union Secretary – Shanaka Bopitiya, one of the key concerns is the failure to increase the mileage rent and transport allowance provided for field duties.

Although they had conveyed their grievances to the Health Ministry, no satisfactory response has been received so far, he has said, adding that they were therefore compelled to engage in trade union action.

However, selected health institutions, such as the port, airport, blood bank, maternity hospitals, children’s hospital, the kidney units and training activities will not be hampered owing to the strike action, he added.Meanwhile, several state sector and provincial public service trade unions are also set to launch an island-wide protest campaign at 12.00 noon today, with Development officers, Management Service Officers, Grama Niladhari officers, Samurdhi officers, Office Services and other employees of the Provincial Public Service sector expected to participate.
