Police have arrested a woman for making false claims that her life was under threat.
They made the arrest after a probe in response to her complaint to Central Province Senior Deputy Inspector General Lalith Pathinayake.
The probe led by SSP Anuruddha Bandaranayake and Crime Division OIC Tilak Samaranayke revealed that the 33-year-old woman had made several false claims to the police.
She had claimed that her father was an engineer and her mother was a teacher, but these claims were found to be false, and in addition, the address given was incorrect.
The woman was found to be a resident of Kekirawa, though she claimed she was from Hindagala, Peradeniya.
Though she claimed that she had received death threats from a person who wanted to extort money from her, it was revealed that she had deliberately sent messages to her phone from another phone and showed the police that she had received death threats.
The woman has, in the process, built close relationships with police officers.
Detectives said she was also wanted in connection with the investigations into the death of the former OIC of the Eheliyagoda Police, Suranjith Silva, who had reportedly shot himself in his quarters in October last year.
The officer had received the last telephone call from the woman.
The woman had taken part in the initial inquiry but later absconded from the investigations, thereby making it difficult for the police to conclude the investigations.
The woman was due to be produced before a magistrate yesterday.
