A 54-year-old Police Sergeant of Wariyapola who was attacked by the villagers in Rambakapuwewa, Kebithigollewa has passed away.
Meanwhile, four suspects have been arrested in connection with this incident.
Earlier yesterday, a man died in the area following a wild elephant attack.
According to the information received that the residents are protesting by blocking the road, the Kebithigollewa Police Inspector and another team of officers have visited the venue.
The police said the police inspector and two other officers were attacked with a club by the angry locals.
Police Spokesman SSP Nihal Thalduwa said the police fired into the air to control the situation and to save the police officer who was being assaulted.
