Poson Full Moon Poya day, today

Published

on

Poson Poya is commemorated today marking the arrival of Buddhism in Sri Lanka.

Poson is of great historical and religious significance and is celebrated by Buddhists.

Poson commemorates the occasion over 2,000 years ago when Arahat Mahinda converted King Devanampiyatissa to Buddhism.

For Buddhists, Poson is second only to Vesak in terms of importance.

Although Poson is celebrated throughout the island, major ceremonies are organised in Anuradhapura and Mihintale.

Many religious activities are organised in view of Poson such as sil, bodhi pooja, devotional songs, pandols, and lanterns.
