Postal voting by State sector employees for the 2024 Parliamentary Election will take place today (30).

The Election Commission (EC) stated that the Police and staff of District Secretariat offices, Election Commission offices and the office of the Inspector General of Police have been given the opportunity to cast their postal votes today (30) or on November 4.

Opportunity has been given to the Tri-Forces and rest of the government institutions to cast their postal votes on November 1 or 4, the Election Commission stated.

Government officials who are unable to cast their postal vote on the designated days have been given the opportunity to cast their votes on November 07 or 08 at the district election offices in the respective district where their workplaces are situated.

A total of 738,050 have qualified to cast their votes through postal voting for the upcoming Parliamentary Election, out of the 759,210 postal voting applications received. A total of 21,160 applications were rejected. An increase of 25,731 postal voting applications were received for the General Election compared to the recently concluded Presidential Election, the Election Commission stated.

According to the Election Commission, there are 8,821 candidates who are contesting the Parliamentary Election which will be held on November 14. EC Chairman R.M. A.L. Rathnayake said that the index finger on the left hand will be marked at the 2024 Parliamentary Election instead of the little finger on the left hand. Any voter who does not have an index finger on their left hand will be marked on the thumb or any other finger on the right hand.

This decision has been made by the Election Commission as per Section 38(3)(b) of the Parliamentary Elections Act 1 of 1981, in order to avoid any potential issues due to the little finger on the left hand having been already marked for the 2024 Presidential Election on September 21 and the thumb on the left hand which was marked at the Elpitiya Pradeshiya Sabha Election which was held on October 26.
