General Secretary of Ceylon Teachers Service Union (CTU) – Mr. Joseph Stalin says that the electricity supply to about 22 schools in the Matara region has been temporarily disconnected since yesterday (19) due to outstanding electricity bills.

Noting that the outstanding amount is around 2.5 million, he pointed out that this is due to the zonal education office lacking funds to pay the outstanding bills.

Mr. Joseph Stalin says that this is a complete conspiracy to get the students’ parents to pay the bills and emphasizes that immediate action should be taken in this regard.

Speaking further, Mr. Stalin said,

“The regrettable fact is that the affected schools are in the area of Power Minister – Kanchana Wijesekera. Matara Fort President’s College, Uyanwatta Model School, Mahamaya Balika Vidyalaya and several other schools are holding various events at this time of the year. All these activities have been disrupted at the present. It is the responsibility of the government to pay bills. If that doesn’t happen, what should be done is to request that sum from the government… not disconnecting the power supply.”

Mr. Stalin warned to take Trade Union action if the issue is not resolved.
