President meets SAARC Secretary General

President Ranil Wickremesinghe met with SAARC Secretary General Golam Sarwar at the Presidential Secretariat this morning (12 June). The meeting focused on addressing issues related to various projects among SAARC countries, with the President urging impartial intervention from the Secretary General.

The discussion also covered the country’s agricultural modernization programme and explored potential support from SAARC member nations. Additionally, the development of the SAARC Cultural Center for Modern Art in Sri Lanka was a key topic of conversation.

Undergrad goes missing at Port City beach while snorkeling

A 24-year-old university student from Asgiriya, Gampaha, has gone missing while swimming in the sea off the Colombo Port City beach.

The incident occurred yesterday morning (June 26) when a group of students from the Universities of Colombo and Moratuwa were snorkeling and observing the seabed at leisure.

The student failed to resurface, prompting a complaint to the Colombo Port Police.

Lifeguards later recovered the snorkel believed to be belonging to the missing student.

A joint search operation involving Navy divers from the Colombo Port and Rangala Navy Division is currently underway. Further investigations are underway by the Colombo Port Police.

Kunming-Colombo freight service takes off

In a boost to bilateral trade, China’s S.F. Airlines launched its inaugural Kunming-Colombo cargo flight yesterday, marking a new chapter in Sri Lanka’s logistics connectivity with Yunnan Province.

S.F. Airlines deployed a Boeing 747-200 aircraft for the inaugural flight, which arrived at BIA from Kunming at 10:50 a.m. yesterday (26), carrying 22 metric tons of cargo.

Charred remains of man found in a car

Charred remains of an individual discovered inside a car in a forested area of Diyabate, Mahawa, has been identified as a 49-year-old hotel businessman from Millawa, Kurunegala, police said.

The body was found following a tip-off, and initial investigations confirmed the deceased had gone missing on June 25 after leaving home for a haircut. When he failed to return, his wife lodged a complaint with Doratiyawa Police.

She later identified the body during the investigation. A post-mortem examination is scheduled for today (June 27) at Kurunegala General Hospital.

Police have yet to determine whether the death was a suicide or a homicide.

Mahawa Police Headquarters is conducting further investigations.
