President Ranil returns after attending Berlin Global Dialogue

President Ranil Wickremesinghe has returned to the island this morning (Oct. 01), after concluding his official visit to Germany to attend the ‘Berlin Global Dialogue’.

The Sri Lankan head of state left for Germany on Friday (Sep. 27) in order to attend the dialogue which was held on September 28 and 29, 2023 in Berlin.  The global high-level forum, was a gathering influential decision-makers and leaders from the realms of politics, business and society, alongside young visionaries.

The Sri Lankan leader delivered the opening remarks on the first day of the two-day event in the German capital, during which he underscored the need for a comprehensive international dialogue to address global challenges in 2024.

Meanwhile speaking during the “Berlin Dialogue” Roundtable, the President also claimed that debt restructuring discussions with China so far have been positive and that they have to talk with the Paris Club and India once again.

However, President Wickremesinghe also engaged in bilateral talks with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and Kazakhstan President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev on the sidelines of the Berlin Global Dialogue.

President Wickremesinghe was accompanied by Senior Advisor to the President on National Security and Chief of Staff to the President, Sagala Ratnayaka; President’s Senior Adviser on Economic Affairs, Dr. R.H.S Samarathunga; and Secretary of the Foreign Ministry, Aruni Wijewardhena.

He also joined the Leaders Dialogue session on “The Role of Kazakhstan in the Transition of the Global Economy” led by the Kazakhstan President.

Heavy rains expected in several areas today

The Department of Meteorology says that showers or thundershowers will occur at times in Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central, Southern and North-western provinces.

Heavy rains above 100 mm are likely at some places in the Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces and in Nuwara-Eliya, Kandy, Galle and Matara districts.

Several spells of showers may occur in the Northern Province and in Anuradhapura district.

Strong winds of about 50-60 kmph can be expected at times over Western slopes of the central hills and in Northern, North-central, Western, Sabaragamuwa, North-western and Southern provinces and in Trincomalee district.

The general public is kindly requested to take adequate precautions to minimize damages caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.

President meets German FM

As part of the official visit to the Federal Republic of Germany, President Anura Kumara Disanayake met with German Foreign Minister Dr. Johann Wadephul yesterday evening (June 11) at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in Berlin.

The discussion focused on identifying new avenues for expanding bilateral cooperation, particularly in the areas of trade, the digital economy, investment and vocational training, in line with the priorities of the Sri Lankan government.

The meeting was attended by Minister of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment and Tourism, Vijitha Herath, Sri Lanka’s Ambassador to Germany, Ms. Varuni Muthukumarana, Chairman of the Board of Investment of Sri Lanka Arjuna Herath, Director General for Europe and North America at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment and Trade Sugeeshwara Gunaratna and other officials.

76 arrested over illegal fishing

76 persons involved in various illegal fishing activities have been apprehended in multiple locations, during separate search operations conducted by the Navy from May 26 – June 07.

The operations also made way for the seizure of 20 dinghies employed for these illegal practices.
These operations were conducted by the Northern and Eastern Naval Command in Kadeikadu and Pudumathalan in Jaffna, Kalladichenai, Addukkupadu, Cod Bay, Poduwakattu, Kuchchaveli and Salpearu in Trincomalee as well as Palaminmadu in Batticaloa coastal areas. The individuals were held for their involvement in fishing with unauthorized nets, light-coarse fishing and night diving to harvest sea cucumbers. Apart from the 76 individuals and 20 dinghies, the Navy had also taken into custody 17 unauthorized fishing nets.

The suspects along with fishing boats and unauthorized gear held in these separate operations were handed over to the offices of Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources in Jaffna, Trincomalee, Echchalampaththu, Mullaitivu, Kuchchaveli, Cod Bay and Batticaloa for legal action.
