President returns after 12-day foreign visit

President Ranil Wickramasinghe has returned to the island after completing his 12-day long foreign visit. 

The President and his delegation arrived at Katunayake Airport at 8:30 this morning on Emirates Airlines flight EK650 from Dubai.

During his extensive foreign visit, President Wickramasinghe attended significant international events, including the 54th Annual Meeting of the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, the 19th Summit of Heads of State of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) in Kampala, Uganda, and the 3rd South Summit of the Group of 77 (G77) and China in Kampala, Uganda.

Political parties to be briefed on Regulation of Election Expenditure Act

The Election Commission of Sri Lanka has decided to brief all political parties on the Regulation of Election Expenditure Act.

Chairman of the Commission – R. M. A. L. Ratnayake explained that the discussion will be held today (Feb. 27) and on March 06 as the upcoming elections will be the first to be held since the Act was passed.

According to the Regulation of Election Expenditure Act, all expenses incurred for the purpose of elections and campaigns must be limited, he noted.

Non-academic university staff to launch 2-day token strike

The non-academic staff members of state universities have decided to go on a two-day token strike over several demands including a salary hike.

Accordingly, the strike will be held tomorrow (Feb.28) and the day after (Feb.29), University Trade Union Joint Committee’s Dhammika Priyantha said.

The committee had also warned to resort to a continuous TU action if authorities fail to address their issues within a week.
