President Wickremesinghe thanks MPs for support in Facebook post

Posting on Facebook, President Ranil Wickremesinghe expressed his gratitude to all the MPs who supported him.

President thanked the MPs who’ve been with him on his journey. In a special address, he highlighted that the support from the ones who stood by his side from the very start, have made the first steps taken to recovery, possible.

He commended them saying that they have believed in him and his plan when the country was in crisis, with people struggling for fuel, medicine, and essentials.

He admired their commitment that kept the country going when the challenges seemed insurmountable.

Addressing the MPs who joined midway, he highlighted that they saw the progress and therefore chose to be part of the change.

The President further said that he extends a warm welcome to those joining him at this moment;

“To those now joining us, welcome. Your support shows the positive direction we’re heading. You understand the importance of putting aside party politics to unite as one. Together, we can achieve even more. To the MPs yet to join us, we’re ready to welcome you. Our mission to build a prosperous, united Sri Lanka is ongoing, and we need every willing hand to make it a reality. This journey hasn’t been easy, but by coming together, we’ve started to turn the tide. Together, we will create the Sri Lanka we all believe in. Thank you for your dedication, courage, and commitment to our country’s future”

25 inmates ineligible for Presidential pardon, released during 2024 Xmas

The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has unveiled that 25 prison inmates not eligible for Presidential Pardon have been released in that manner on Christmas Day in 2024.

This has come into light during an ongoing investigation pertaining to the release of a prisoner on Presidential Pardon from Anuradhapura Prison, which had sparked controversy.

The report reveals that after the President’s signature on the records, prison officials had failed to properly re-verify documents, enabling corrupt officials to illegally release the prisoners.

The CID is currently investigating this matter.

03 Police officers injured in group assault in Beruwala

03 police officers, including the OIC of the Crimes Division of Beruwala Police, were injured in an assault near the Beruwala fishing harbor and admitted to Nagoda Teaching Hospital.

05 individuals have been arrested over the incident, according to the police.

This assault reportedly began after police instructed a group hanging flags from a lorry near the Beruwala fishing harbor not to block the road.

The verbal exchange has escalated into an assault on the police, prompting officers to fire shots into the air to control the situation.

Heavy rains expected from today

Due to the effect of the active southwest monsoon condition, showery conditions are expected to enhance in the southwestern part of the island from today (June 10), with strong wind gusts over the island and in sea areas, the Department of Meteorology has said.

Accordingly, the general public has been requested to be attentive to future forecasts issued by the Met. Dept. in this regard.

Showers will occur at times in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central and North-western provinces and in the Galle and Matara districts.

Heavy falls of about 100 mm are likely at some places in the Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces and in the Nuwara-Eliya, Kandy, Galle and Matara districts.

Several spells of showers may occur in the Northern province and in Anuradhapura and in the Hambantota districts as well.

Showers or thundershowers are also expected at a few places in the Badulla, Ampara and Batticaloa districts during the afternoon or night.

Meanwhile, strong winds of about 50 kmph can be expected at times over the Western slopes of the central hills and in the Northern, North-central, North-western and Southern provinces and in the Trincomalee district.

The general public has been requested to take adequate precautions to minimize damages caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.
