Election Commission (EC) Chairman R. M. A. L. Rathnayake announced that the date for the forthcoming Presidential Election will be set by the end of this month.

For the first time, candidates must declare their election expenditure, in accordance with the Election Expenditure Act of 2023.

The regulations, which were not applied in the last postponed election, will be fully enforced this time to promote accountability and reduce unethical fundraising practices.

The election is anticipated to be held between September 16 and October 17 this year.

EC Chairman Rathnayake confirmed the readiness of the Government Printer, the Inspector General of Police, the Postmaster General, and other relevant parties for the election.

The Finance Ministry has allocated Rs. 10 billion for the election from the 2024 Budget, and EC officials will meet with Finance Ministry key officials this week to discuss funding arrangements.

The Supreme Court has clarified the Presidential term as five years, suggesting that this be enshrined in domestic legislation to avoid ambiguity. The EC will also address the media this week regarding election organization.
