Presidential Secretariat clarifies reports on MR’s security

The Presidential Secretariat says that it has noted recent media reports claiming that the security of former President Mahinda Rajapaksa has been reduced.

Noting that all those reports are false, the Presidential Secretariat confirms that it has provided him with the benefits outlined in the Presidents’ Entitlements Act No. 4 of 1986.

The secretariat further notes : 

Former President Mahinda Rajapaksa is entitled to a pension due to a retired President, an official residence at Wijerama Mawatha, Colombo 07, and a secretary’s allowance.

Additionally, he has been provided with three vehicles: a Mercedes Benz -600 Maybatch (2008), a Toyota Land Cruiser (2017), and a Mercedes Benz – G63 AMG 4×4 (2013). For these vehicles, a monthly fuel allowance of 1,950 liters will be provided, along with three designated drivers.

The Ministry of Defence and the Ministry of Public Security are providing security for former President Mahinda Rajapaksa. The army personnel assigned to this task include three commando officers, four unit officers, and a total of 56 other ranks, bringing the total number of army personnel to 07 officers and 56 ranks.

In addition to the military, 180 police officers are also on duty to ensure his safety, which includes 29 police drivers.

Furthermore, a cabinet sub-committee has been established to evaluate the privileges of former presidents, and future decisions and actions will be taken based on the committee’s recommendations.

Injured Wanindu ruled out of Bangladesh T20I series

Sri Lanka’s T20I captain Wanindu Hasaranga has been ruled out of the upcoming T20I series against Bangladesh after suffering a hamstring injury to his right leg.

The injury occurred while he was batting during the third and final ODI of the recently concluded series.

Following a medical evaluation, Hasaranga will return to Colombo to undergo rehabilitation at Sri Lanka Cricket’s High Performance Centre.

Sri Lanka Cricket has confirmed that no replacement will be added to the T20I squad in his absence.

Thushara Upuldeniya granted bail

The Colombo Magistrate’s Court has granted bail to suspended Prisons Commissioner General Thushara Upuldeniya.

Upuldeniya was previously remanded over allegations of facilitating the unlawful release of an inmate from Anuradhapura Prison under the guise of a presidential amnesty.

Wimal appears before CID

National Freedom Front (NFF) leader and former MP Wimal Weerawansa appeared before the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to provide a statement regarding remarks he made about a shipment of 323 containers linked to a provincial governor.

He was summoned to record a statement in connection with multiple complaints received over his comments made during a media briefing on January 29.

Following his remarks, Western Province Governor – Hanif Yusoof lodged a complaint with the CID on January 30, claiming he was targeted through social media posts.

Police said that several other parties have also filed complaints related to the same incident.
