Probe over student death at Wayamba National College of Education

The Ministry of Education (MOE) has launched an urgent investigation into the suicide of a second-year female student at the Wayamba National College of Education in Bingiriya.

The student (24), a resident of Teldeniya, Kandy, was found dead in her dormitory on May 23. Friends and family allege she faced mental distress due to harassment by lecturers.

Students held a silent protest on May 23 calling for immediate action and demanding accountability.

Police say that statements have been recorded from several persons, including lecturers and students, regarding the death.

New chairman appointed to CSE

Dimuthu Abeyesekera has been appointed as the new Chairman of the Colombo Stock Exchange (CSE).

The CSE announced that Mr. Abeyesekera brings over 35 years of experience in the capital markets and has served on the CSE Board for the past six years.

He currently serves as the Director/CEO of Asha Securities Ltd, which is affiliated with Phillip Capital Singapore, a specialized financial services organization managing assets worth over US$ 35 billion with a network of offices around the world.

Abeysekera also currently serves as the Director at Asha Financial Services Ltd, a specialised margin Trading Company in Colombo.

Former Presidents – Mahinda Rajapaksa, Maithripala Sirisena and Ranil Wickremesinghe as well as former Ministers Basil Rajapaksa, P. Harrison, Wijith Wijithamuni de Soysa, Lakshman Yapa Abeywardena and Lakshman Wasantha Perera have been found to be involved in a USD 110 million cattle import scam, NPP MP Nihal Galappathi told Parliament today (June 19)

Noting that old cows have been imported as milch cows, he said none of them will be shown any mercy.

Keheliya, wife & daughter bailed ; more family members arrested

Former Minister Keheliya Rambukwella, along with his wife and daughter, has been released from remand custody after fulfilling bail conditions, as ordered by the Colombo Magistrate’s Court today (June 19).

Keheliya, his wife Kusum Priyadarshini Epa, and their daughter Chandula Ramali Rambukwella, were arrested under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act and later granted bail by the Colombo Magistrate’s Court yesterday. However, they were remanded due to their failure to fulfill the bail conditions.

Meanwhile, Two daughters and the son-in-law of Keheliya Rambukwella were arrested by the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC) today (June 19).

Chamithri Rambukwella, Amali Rambukwella and her husband Isuru Pulasthi Bandara have been arrested in this manner.

They are implicated in the investigation into undeclared assets worth over Rs. 134 million which includes a house valued Rs. 40 million and a van and a motor vehicle worth Rs. Rs. 20.5 million.

As part of the ongoing investigation, several fixed deposit accounts and approximately 40 life insurance investment plans have also been suspended.

They are scheduled to be produced before the Colombo Magistrate’s Court.
