Fmr. MP who fired shots in the air, arrested

An investigation has been initiated into an incident where a former MP of Kalutara district had fired gunshots into the air.

The former MP – Mr. P.D. Abayaratne, who is the Horana organizer of the Samagi Jana Balawegaya, had done so to scare a group of people.

Horana police says that Mr. Abayaratne has been arrested and his 9mm type firearm has been seized with 03 live bullets. He is to be produced before the Horana Magistrate Court.

According to the police, Mr. Abayaratne had gone to inspect a tea cultivation owned by him. He had fired shots into the air after a heated exchange of words with a group of persons who had trespassed on the land which had escalated to a level where one trespasser had attempted to attack the regional politician with an axe.

Police say that Mr. Abayaratne had fired two shots into the air and that investigations have revealed that he does possess a legal permit for the firearm.

Pvt. secretary of late minister injured in shooting

A shooting incident has been reported in Kandana this morning (July 03).

Reportedly, two people traveling in a car were shot near the Kandana Public Market.

According to reports, Sameera Manahara, who served as the private secretary of late Minister Mangala Samaraweera, has been injured in the shooting.

The two injured individuals have been admitted to the Ragama Hospital, police say.

Investigations are underway to identify and apprehend the assailants.

Young woman brutally murdered in Kuruwita

A young woman was found in the Dewipahala-Dodam Ella area in Kuruwita, after being brutally attacked and her gold necklace stolen

According to the police, the victim was found collapsed on the roadside with severe neck injuries caused by a sharp weapon. She was rushed to the Ratnapura Hospital but succumbed to her injuries shortly after admission.

The victim has been identified as a 26-year-old.

Arrests are yet to be made and an investigation is underway.

Revised pensions to be granted from this month

The Ministry of Public Administration, Provincial Councils, and Local Government has announced that the revised pensions approved under the recent Budget will be implemented starting this month.

Minister – Prof. Chandana Abeyratne has stated that more than 500,000 retired public sector employees will benefit from the increased pension payment.
