Acting Inspector General of Police, Priyantha Weerasuriya, has issued a new directive to all senior officers and Officers-in-Charge (OICs) to establish Public Safety Committees as part of a renewed effort to strengthen ties between the Sri Lanka Police and the public.
The IGP emphasized that public cooperation is essential to realize the vision of the Sri Lanka Police, particularly in their mission to promote social harmony through effective crime control and management. He noted that public involvement plays a crucial role in safeguarding the community under a comprehensive national security strategy.
Highlighting the importance of youth engagement, the IGP encouraged the use of creativity, determination, and new knowledge to enhance public outreach. As part of this initiative, Public Safety Committees will be formed across all 14,022 Grama Niladhari Divisions, with designated police officers assigned to each area to encourage active citizen participation in ensuring community safety.
According to the Police Media Division, this move aims to modernize and reinforce the existing community policing model, aligning it with contemporary challenges and the current social landscape.
