A decision has been taken to import 10,000 rail tracks from China under the loan assistance of the Asian Development Bank, the Transport Ministry said.

It said the imported rail tracks will be received by the end of next month.

Meanwhile, the Railways Department said that many spare parts including nails needed for railway maintenance have also been imported.

A senior official said that renovation will be commenced once the rail tracks are received.

The speed of trains has been reduced in many places due to dilapidated tracks severely affecting train services along the coastal line.

As a result, the Railways Department recently took steps to reduce the train speed from Colombo Fort to Panadura to 30 kilometers per hour.
