Although the revenue of the Railways Department was Rs. 2.6 billion in 2022, Rs.7.7 billion were spent on overtime allowances and salaries, Cabinet Spokesperson and Minister of Transport and Highways Bandula Gunawardana said.
Speaking at the Cabinet news briefing held at the Government Information Department yesterday (13), the minister said that the Railways Department had suffered a loss of 47 billion rupees in 2014.
The loss has been reduced to 37 billion rupees in 2021 and 32 billion rupees in 2022.
The minister said that if the Railways Department is not turned into a statutory body, it will have to be sold.
Meanwhile, he said that the Railways Department has 14,000 acres of land and they were hoping to get proposals from the private sector to invest in these lands.
