Rains in Western & Sabaragamuwa provinces today

Several areas of Western and Sabaragamuwa Provinces, as well as the districts of Kandy, Galle, and Matara will have showers or thundershowers after 1:00 pm today (11), the Department of Meteorology said.  

Present wet weather conditions in the Northern, North-Central, Uva and Eastern Provinces are predicted to decrease from today after days of heavy rainfall triggering flood situation and earth-slips.

Occasional showers and thundershowers are expected in Eastern and Uva Provinces along with Hambantota, Polonnaruwa, Matale and Nuwara Eliya Districts.

Parts of Uva Province besides Polonnaruwa and Matale Districts will see fairly heavy rainfall over 50mm.

A few showers are due in Northern Province and in Anuradhapura District.

Cabinet approves use of Galle Face Green for social events

Cabinet approval has been granted to utilise Galle Face Green for various social activities, including festivals, musical events and other celebrations, subject to specific criteria.

Cabinet Spokesman Minister Vijitha Herath explained today (Nov. 06) a previous Cabinet decision had declared not to allow events at the venue, except for religious events.

However, since it costs around Rs. 2.5 million – Rs. 3 million on a monthly basis to maintain this space, it was deemed appropriate to provide the space for events based on the concept of a ‘green and clean Galle Face Green’.

ODI & T20I squads against Kiwis, announced

The Sri Lanka Cricket Selection Committee has announced squads for the T20I and ODI series to be played against the New Zealand national men’s team.

The two T20I games will be played on Nov. 09 and 10 while the ODIs will be held on Nov. 13, 17 and 19.

RDICS, Dambulla will be the venue for the first three games, while the final two ODIs will be played at PICS Pallekele.

Restrictions on African Swine Fever control, eased

Sri Lanka’s Department of Animal Production and Health has announced steps to issue a new Gazette notification, relaxing some of the restrictions imposed earlier due to the African swine fever outbreak.

Director General of the department Dr. Hemali Kothalawala stated that permission has now been granted for the transportation of healthy animals.
