Rains to be increased from tomorrow; Reservoirs not yet full

The prevailing rainy weather conditions in south-western part of the country could enhance during September 01,02 and 03, the Department of Meteorology said.

It said rains will occur at times in Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central and Northwestern Provinces and in Galle and Matara Districts.

Fairly heavy showers of about 75mm are likely at some places in Western and Sabaragamuwa Provinces and in Galle and Matara Districts.

Showers or thundershowers will occur at several places in Eastern and Uva Provinces and in Polonnaruwa, Vavuniya and Mullaitivu Districts during the evening or night.

The department requested the people to take precautions to minimise damages caused by temporary localised strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.

Reservoirs not yet full even after the rain

Meanwhile, the Irrigation Department said that the water capacity of the reservoirs has not increased so far despite the rains experienced in some parts of the country.

Water Management Unit Director Sudarshani Vidanapathirana said the water capacity of 73 main reservoirs under the purview of the Irrigation Department is about 800,000 acre-feet.

This is 27% of the water capacity that should be in the reservoirs.
