Rape at A’pura hospital quarters : GMOA threatens to strike

Minister of Public Security – Ananda Wijepala has stated that the suspect who allegedly sexually assaulted a lady doctor at the doctors’ quarters of the Anuradhapura Teaching Hospital last night (March 10), has been identified.

Speaking in Parliament today (March 11), the Minister revealed that the suspect is an army deserter, and that 05 police teams have been deployed to arrest him.

Doctors at the Anuradhapura Teaching Hospital launched a strike this morning, calling for the immediate arrest of the suspect.

According to reports, the unidentified assailant had allegedly entered the premises around 6.30pm – 7.00pm, threatened her with a knife, and sexually assaulted the victim.

Anuradhapura Police is conducting further investigations.

Meanwhile, the Government Medical Officers’ Association (GMOA) has also threatened to launch a strike across the entire North Central Province if the suspect is not arrested within tomorrow (March 12).
