Red weather alert: Low-pressure system to intensify near SL

The Meteorology Department has issued a Red Warning for land and sea areas around Sri Lanka as a low-pressure area has formed over the southeast Bay of Bengal. 

The system is expected to intensify into a depression over the southwest Bay of Bengal by November 25 and move toward Sri Lanka’s northern coast.

Key Impacts:

  • Heavy Rainfall: Eastern and Uva provinces may experience rainfall exceeding 150 mm.
  • Rough Seas: Sea areas from Mannar to Hambantota, via Kankasanthurai, Trincomalee, Batticaloa, and Pottuvil, will experience wind speeds of 60-70 km/h, with very rough to high sea conditions.
  • Safety Advisory:
    • Naval & Fishing Activities: Fishermen and naval communities are advised not to venture into these sea areas from November 24 until further notice.

The public is also urged to contact the local disaster management authorities for emergency assistance and to be attentive about future advisories issued by the Department of Meteorology in this regard.
