A retired Navy officer who was driving a car with a fake number plate was arrested, the Panadura Walana Central Anti-Corruption Unit said.
Police investigations revealed that the chassis and engine numbers of the car taken into police custody had been erased and changed.
The suspect was arrested while driving in Ratmalana based on the information received by the Panadura Walana Central Anti-Corruption Unit that a man holding a high rank in a private security firm in Mt. Lavinia was using a car with a fake number plate,
Police said the investigations revealed that the registration number attached to the vehicle was a number given by the Department of Motor Traffic to a luxury car owned by a person in Ampara area.
Police said that they will refer the vehicle to the government analyst to find out whether it had been stolen or made up with assembled parts.
The suspect is scheduled to be produced in the Mt. Lavinia Magistrate’s Court.
