Rs.20mn spent on Mayor’s Residence during Rosy’s tenure

More than 2 million rupees have been spent on the maintenance and refurbishment work of the Colombo Mayor’s official residence during the four-year tenure of former Mayor Rosy Senanayake.

This was revealed according to the information obtained under the Right to Information Act by Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) MP Mujibur Rahman and former members of the Colombo Municipal Council.

Accordingly, Rs.4.4 million have been spent only for the renovation work of the residence and Rs.2.29 million have been spent for the improvement work carried out in 2018.

Rs.1.6 million have been spent in 2019 to increase the height of the wall around the residence.

Meanwhile, Rs.1 million have been spent on furniture in 2019, Rs.3.9 million in 2020 and Rs.1.4 million in 2021.

Mahapola & Bursary raised

Cabinet approval has been granted an increase in the Mahapola Scholarship allowance for state university students to Rs. 7,500, and the Bursary to Rs. 6,500, effective from April 2025.

Both student unions and the Federation of University Teachers’ Association (FUTA) have voiced concerns over the delayed raise in the Mahapola Scholarship.

Cabinet approval to seek BRICS membership

Cabinet approval has been granted to a proposal by Minister of Foreign Affairs Ali Sabry to apply for membership of BRICS organization and the new development bank to be established under it.

The approval came after considering the report of an officer’s committee which looked into the  advantages and disadvantages of joining the BRICS group as well as accessing to the new development bank scheduled to be established under the BRICS organization.
