The Prisons Department has planned to enhance security in Sri Lankan prisons using modern technology and new mechanisms.

As part of this initiative, several security measures, including the upgrading of mobile phone signal jammers will be implemented. Rs.300 million has been allocated to the department for the first quarter of this year. The programme is being carried out under the guidance of the Defence Ministry.

Following the recent shooting and assassination of Ganemulla Sanjeewa within the court premises, attention has been drawn to strengthening security measures within prisons, according to prison sources. It has been revealed that certain shortcomings in the existing jammers have allowed inmates to maintain mobile phone connections with external parties.

This situation has posed security concerns not only for prison officials but also for the inmates themselves.

Responding to an inquiry from the Daily News Prisons Commissioner Gamini Dissanayake stated that although jammers have already been installed in several prisons, reports indicate that they do not completely block mobile signals in some instances.

Due to this issue, the department is now working on installing more technologically advanced jamming systems to prevent inmates from communicating with external contacts via mobile phones, Dissanayake further explained.
