In the first half of 2022, 144,989 metric tons of 28 food crops including paddy and 93 million coconuts have been destroyed by wild animals.

This was revealed in a research report prepared by the Hector Kobbekaduwa Agricultural Research and Training Institute on the impact of wild animals on farmlands.

According to the report, the value of the food crops destroyed by wild animals is Rs.30,215 million.

Drawing attention to the issues pointed out in this report, the Ministry of Wildlife and Forest Resources Conservation has taken steps to appoint a committee to study the measures to be taken in future to prevent the damage caused by wild animals to plantations and to prevent elephant-human conflicts by obtaining opinions and suggestions from various parties.
