Teachers in Sabaragamuwa Province have been strictly prohibited from conducting extra tuition classes by charging a fee to the students they teach at school.
Provincial Education Secretary Sujani R. Wijetunga has issued a circular imposing this ban.
She has also instructed all the principals to laminate a notice and display it in front of the school entrance to inform the parents and guardians in this regard.
The secretary said that she should be informed through the Regional Director of Education regarding the teachers who do not follow the circular, and strict disciplinary action will be taken against such teachers and their immediate supervisor, the principal.
Ms. Wijetunga said that she has been receiving complaints that the teachers are putting pressure on the children to attend their classes and that the children are being subjected to various intimidations when they do not attend those classes.
