The State Minister of Water Supply Sanath Nishantha was suspended from Parliament sessions for two weeks from today (22).

Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardane said he suspended MP Nishatha for his unruly behaviour in Parliament yesterday (21).

The Speaker told Parliament that he took the decision in terms of the powers vested in him under Standing Order 14.

Parliamentary proceedings yesterday (21) were delayed for a few minutes, due to chaos in the house following a statement made by Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa.

The Opposition Leader raised a question on the Supreme Court ruling on Sri Lanka’s bankruptcy, which cited that fundamental rights were violated through economic decisions taken from 2019-2022.

MPs from the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna protested against the statement and MP Sanath Nishantha was seen taking away the document containing the opposition leader’s statement.
