Sanitation units to be constructed in Batti. under Indian grant project

A Project Steering Committee (PSC) Meeting on Construction of Sanitation Units/Toilets in Batticaloa District was convened today under the co-chairmanship of Deputy High Commissioner, Mr. Vinod K. Jacob and Mr. Gunadasa Samarasinghe, Secretary, Ministry of Agriculture, Government of Sri Lanka.

The meeting was held in hybrid format with participation of District Secretariat, Batticaloa and other relevant stakeholders.

Construction of Sanitation Units in Batticaloa is being undertaken as a grant project by Government of India.

The PSC Meeting held today focused on the revision of modalities for fast-tracking the construction of over a thousand sanitation units in Batticaloa District to enhance the public health conditions of the people in the region. This project is a reflection of India’s continued commitment to carry out human-centric projects in the Eastern Province of Sri Lanka.

India’s overall development assistance to Sri Lanka stands at more than USD 5 billion with nearly USD 600 million being grants.

Close to 65 grant projects have already been carried out across the 25 districts of the country. Currently, over 20 grant projects are at various stages of implementation. Indian Housing Project and 1990 Suwaseriya ambulance service are among the flagship grant projects implemented by India in Sri Lanka.

Govt to present 2026 Appropriation Bill in October

Cabinet approval has been granted to a proposal presented by President Anura Kumara Dissanayake in his capacity as Minister of Finance , Planning and Economic Development to present the Appropriation Bill for the year 2026 to Parliament in October 2025.

Approval has also been granted to present the Budget speech in November 2025 and to hold the third reading and budget debate during November and December.

Yoshitha & Daisy Forrest indicted & bailed

Former President Mahinda Rajapaksa’s son – Yoshitha Rajapaksa, and his grandmother – Daisy Forrest have been formally indicted today (July 02) before the Colombo High Court under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act.

The indictment was presented before High Court Judge Pradeep Abeyratne, who subsequently ordered both defendants to be released on two surety bonds of Rs. 01 million each.

The judge further ordered to obtain fingerprints of the accused and relevant records be summoned as part of the judicial process.
