The Supreme Court (SC) yesterday ordered to suspend the practice of a female lawyer pending the conclusion of Court proceedings against her in a case where she is accused of tearing and chewing essential documents related to a case, taken out of the court safe, at the Kekirawa Magistrate’s Court.

This order was given by a three-judge bench of the Supreme Court headed by Chief Justice Jayantha Jayasuriya hearing a lawsuit filed alleging that the female lawyer had violated the ethics of the legal profession due to that incident.

The female lawyer from Kekirawa was earlier arrested by the Police after the Court staff videotaped the entire incident and complained about it to the Kekirawa Police.

The lawyer had allegedly tried to chew and swallow the original documents related to a case being heard in the Kekirawa District Court against her.

It was mentioned there that a criminal case against this lawyer is also being heard in the Magistrate’s Court for the same incident.

The panel of judges pointed out that the case against the lawyer is very serious and emphasised that no lawyer should do this kind of thing under any circumstance.

The bench then ordered to suspend her legal practice until the trial against her is over.
