A police sergeant on a night mobile patrol was arrested for allegedly trying to sexually harass a woman by breaking into her house in Rambukkana Monday night.

The residents had caught the uniformed sergeant and beat him up after tying him to a tree.

Police said that this officer had broken into a house at Parape, Ihalagama in Rambukkana and attempted to sexually assault a 60-year-old woman.

Under the instructions of this sergeant, two police constables have been deployed on mobile patrol in a police cab from 6.00 pm on the 24th to 6.00 am on the 25th.

The sergeant has told the constables that he had to go back to the police station at around 11.30 pm and left the cab.

According to the constables, the sergeant got down from the cab at an area closer to the police station and said that he would soon return.

Meanwhile, the Rambukkana Police received a message from the 119 emergency hotline that a thief had entered a house at Parape, Ihalagama in Rambukkana.

Accordingly,  two officers attached to the 119 emergency call service of the Rambukkana Police, who were on duty went to the house to find the police sergeant tied to a tree in front of the house.

There was also a motorcycle belonging to the sergeant at that house.

Investigations revealed that this officer had gone to the police station and then had gone to this house on his personal motorcycle.

Upon questioning, the sergeant has told the police that he went to the 60-year-old woman’s house at her invitation.

However, the woman said that she had no connection with the officer and that he had entered the house and harassed her.

The Rambukkana Police arrested the suspect and produced him in the Kegalle Magistrate’s Court.

He was remanded until August 3.

Meanwhile, senior police officers had suspended the officer due to the allegations.
