Several police officers interdicted & transferred over death of woman in custody

Four police officers have been interdicted while three others including two Women Police Constables have been transferred over the death of a 41-year-old female while in Police custody.

The Police Media Division said the deceased, a 41-year-old resident of Badulla, who was employed as a domestic worker at the residence of a film producer, was arrested on the 11th of May.

The arrest was made by the Welikada Police based on a complaint made by the employer of the deceased, claiming that the woman in question had stolen gold jewelry.

According to Police, the woman had briefed about the incident on the 11th of May and later that day was admitted to the Colombo National Hospital after complaining about breathing difficulties.

She succumbed while at the National Hospital. Although the body of the woman was released based on the directive of health authorities following the post-mortem examination, relatives of the woman had raised concerns about the incidents.

Accordingly, a special investigation was launched on the directive of the Inspector General of Police.

During investigations, authorities have uncovered several Police officers had in fact violated several regulations.

Accordingly, four police officers have been interdicted and three others were transferred over the death of the 41-year-old female.

Further investigations are underway to determine additional sanctions on officers who handled the incident.
