It has been revealed that untreated sewage from the Pallekele prison complex has been leaking into the Victoria Reservoir, which is a main source of clean drinking water, the ‘Aruna’ newspaper reports.
It also adds :
Construction of the Pallekele prison complex was to be completed between 2007-2011 but had continued for an additional period of time.
The sewage system had been functioning with no issues until 2019. However, the aforementioned leak is said to have taken place due to non maintenance of the sewage system and its insufficient capacity.
It is also alleged that no steps have been taken so far to prevent the leakage.
