Silence period begins ahead of Gen. Election

The election campaign activities for the upcoming parliamentary election concluded at midnight yesterday (Nov. 11), starting the silence period, which will remain in effect until Election Day on Nov. 14. 

The Election Commission (EC) emphasises that campaigning activities are not permitted during this period.

However, candidates have been given time until midnight today (Nov. 12) to remove their campaign offices. Afterwards, only one office per constituency is allowed for parties and groups. Additionally, a candidate’s house can be used as a party office but no decorations or advertising are permitted.

Meanwhile, Police Spokesman DIG – Nihal Thalduwa has announced that approximately 64,000 police officers will be deployed from today to ensure security during the general election across all constituencies.

Also, PAFFREL Executive Director Rohana Hettiarachchi says that they will deploy approximately 6,000 representatives to monitor this year’s elections.

CIABOC arrests Keheliya, wife & daughter

Former Minister Keheliya Rambukwella, his wife and daughter have been arrested by the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC).

They have been arrested over an investigation into their assets, according to the Bribery Commission.

Earlier this morning, former Minister Rambukwella appeared before CIABOC to record a statement.

CMC mayor assumes duties

Vraie Cally Balthazaar of the National People’s Power (NPP) officially assumed duties as Colombo Municipal Council (CMC) Mayor today (June 18).

The most talked-about candidate in the 2025 Local Government Election, Balthazaar was elected the 26th Mayor of the CMC while receiving 61 votes following a secret ballot on Monday (June 16).

She becomes the second female Mayor of CMC, following Rosy Senanayaka.
