Ex-IGP files petition seeking to prevent his arrest (Update)

Former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Deshabandu Tennakoon has filed a writ petition with the Court of Appeal seeking an order preventing his arrest.

The petition, filed through his legal representatives, has requested that an interim injunction be issued to stay the arrest warrant issued against him by the Matara Magistrate’s Court.

The Matara Magistrate’s Court had recently issued a warrant for the arrest of the former IGP in connection with a shooting incident that took place in front of the W15 Hotel in the Pelena area of Weligama, Matara, on December 31, 2023.

Earlier, Minister of Public Security and Parliamentary Affairs, Ananda Wijepala, had announced that six police teams have been assigned to locate and arrest Tennakoon.

Six police teams assigned to arrest Deshabandu

Minister of Public Security and Parliamentary Affairs, Ananda Wijepala, announced that six police teams have been assigned to locate and arrest former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Deshabandu Tennakoon.

The Minister further mentioned that relevant investigations are currently ongoing.

The Matara Magistrate’s Court issued a warrant for the arrest of Mr. Deshabandu Tennakoon on February 28.

This warrant is related to the investigation into the shooting incident that occurred in front of a hotel in the Pelena area of Matara on December 31, 2023.

Following the court order, the former IGP has also been banned from travelling abroad.

Meanwhile, Deputy Minister of Public Security and Parliamentary Affairs, Attorney-at-Law Sunil Watagala, stated yesterday that steps will be taken to seize the properties of individuals who evade court orders.

He emphasized that rank or position does not exempt anyone from the law.

Public consultation on renewable energy sector kicks off today

The Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka (PUCSL) announced that a public consultation will be held today (July 02) to identify challenges faced by renewable energy developers in Sri Lanka.

The Commission stated that oral submissions from stakeholders will be gathered from 8.00 am –  4.00pm at the Bandaranaike Memorial International Conference Hall (BMICH).

The public consultation is being held under the powers granted to the Commission by Section 17 of the Sri Lanka Public Utilities Commission Act, No. 35 of 2002.

Meanwhile, President of the Solar E P C Association (SEPCA) – Dr. Shyam Pathiraja has said that many stakeholders are expected to present their views on the crisis in the renewable energy sector.

On a related note, National People’s Power (NPP) MP – Ravindra Bandara claimed that the current government has not imposed any restrictions on renewable energy production.

Court order issued against ‘Eh Yaye’ song

The Commercial High Court has issued an interim injunction order, preventing popular artistes Romaine Willis and Mass Ramli Miskin (DJ Mass) from performing, reproducing and distributing the song ‘Eh Yaye’.

Colombo Commercial High Court Judge Priyantha Fernando issued the order after the Plaint filed under the Intellectual Property Act by popular singer Corrine Almeida.

The case also alleges that the musical composition and the lyrics of the song ‘Eh Yaye’ were substantially similar to the song ‘Api Natamu’.

Naming Willis and DJ Mass as defendants,  the plaintiff Corrine Almeida had also stated that she is the owner of the copyright and economic rights to the musical composition and lyrics of her song titled “Api Natamu”.

The plaintiff instituted action in terms of the Intellectual Property Act, No. 36 of 2003 alleging that the musical composition and the lyrics of ‘Eh Yaye’ were substantially similar to the ‘Api Natamu’ song.

Rains expected in several areas today

Several spells of showers will occur in the Western, Sabaragamuwa and North-western provinces and in the Nuwara-Eliya, Kandy, Galle and Matara districts today (July 02), the Department of Meteorology said.

A few showers may occur in the Jaffna and Mannar districts.

Fairly strong winds of about 30-40kmph can be expected at times over the Western slopes of the central hills and in the Northern, North-central and North-western provinces and in the Trincomalee and Hambantota districts.
