The Sri Lanka Working Journalists’ Association (SLWJA) has condemned a recent incident where regional journalists had been allegedly threatened by officials of the President’s Media Division.
In a statement, the SLWJA states that during a recent election rally of President Ranil Wickremesinghe in Kekirawa, a scuffle was recorded by several regional journalists.

However, PMD officials had forcefully taken their camera equipment and deleted footage of the scuffle, the statement notes.

It also states that PMD officials had also threatened these journalists.

Deeply condemning the incident, the PMD states that they consider the incident as an act that threatens the Freedom of Speech and Expression.

The SLWJA also calls on the relevant authorities to hold an impartial investigation into the incident.
