Sri Lanka has acceded to the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW), becoming the 69th state party.
Minister of Foreign Affairs Ali Sabry deposited the Instrument of Accession to the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons at the UN headquarters in New York on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly.
Foreign Minister Sabry said Sri Lanka by becoming the 69th state party to the Treaty has once again reaffirmed its long-standing commitment towards nuclear disarmament in favour of international peace and security.
The Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons includes a comprehensive set of prohibitions on participating in any nuclear weapon activities.
These include undertakings not to develop, test, produce, acquire, possess, stockpile, use or threaten to use nuclear weapons. The Treaty also prohibits the deployment of nuclear weapons on national territory and the provision of assistance to any State in the conduct of prohibited activities.
