Strong winds sweeping across the Rajarata region caused an unusual accident in Anuradhapura yesterday (27), when a parked three-wheeler was blown over 50 meters and plunged into the Tissa Wewa
The three-wheeler, owned by a resident of Devanampiyathissapura, had been parked on the embankment road of the tank without its brakes engaged. The owner had left the vehicle to bathe nearby when powerful gusts pushed it at high speed into the water. As the vehicle rolled into the tank, the owner attempted to intervene but was forced to jump into the water and narrowly escaped injury, according to police reports.
The Anuradhapura Police Lifeguard Unit initially faced difficulty locating the submerged vehicle due to continued strong winds. A team of divers from the same unit was called in to assist with the recovery. After an intensive search, the three-wheeler was eventually located a few meters from the point where it had sunk.
The operation was carried out under the guidance of Senior Superintendent of Police Thilina Hewapathirana and involved officers from the Anuradhapura Divisional Lifeguard Unit.
