Snr. oncologist at Karapitiya hospital, bailed

The senior oncologist of the Karapitiya Teaching Hospital, who was recently arrested and remanded over allegedly assaulting a female junior staff member, has been granted bail.

61-year-old Dr. Krishantha Perera was granted bail on the orders of the Galle Magistrate Isuru Neththikumara today (22 Jan.) on two personal bonds of Rs. 01 million each.

Meanwhile, the three minor staff members of the Karapitiya Teaching Hospital, including a female, who were arrested on 21 January in connection with a complaint by Dr. Perera alleging assault, were further remanded until Jan. 29.

The court also ordered that the three suspects be referred to an identification parade on the aforementioned date.

Non-academic university staff to launch 2-day token strike

The non-academic staff members of state universities have decided to go on a two-day token strike over several demands including a salary hike.

Accordingly, the strike will be held tomorrow (Feb.28) and the day after (Feb.29), University Trade Union Joint Committee’s Dhammika Priyantha said.

The committee had also warned to resort to a continuous TU action if authorities fail to address their issues within a week.
